Qsymia is a novel medication that is a combination of
phentermine and topiramate. From the clinical trials, this drug was quite
effective in not only lowering blood
pressure and blood sugar but it also reduced weight.
Phentermine is an old
CNS stimulant and topiramate is an anticonvulsant. So far, this combination has
been deemed safe if taken for short periods. The drug has been approved by the
FDA for weight loss in certain obese patients.
I am always skeptical of
clinical trials run by funding from pharmaceutical companies. Moreover, doctors
who write reports are often paid money by the companies and the negative
results are never published. You should also be aware that approval of the drug
was delayed for at least a year because the FDA was concerned about some
serious side effects.
Finally, this drug combination is also
prohibitively expensive. If I were you, I would wait a while before getting a prescription
for this medication. Wait about a year and then you will have a better idea how
other people do. In the meantime, walk regularly and eat less.
