What are my alternatives to
hip Replacement? Part 1
Arthritis of the hip can
cause severe pain and difficulty walking. Because of the unbearable pain and
poor quality of life, many individuals will eventually turn to a surgeon for
help. Even though hip replacement is commonly performed for severe arthritis,
it is not free of complications. The other alternatives to hip replacement
surgery include the following:
Before undergoing any type
of hip surgery, all patients should try to change their lifestyle reduce weight
and avoid activities that stress the hip joint. This means avoiding prolonged
standing or walking. If gait instability is present, one should try and use a
ambulatory device. Physical therapy is recommended for all patients as this can
allow increase in muscle strength, better joint function and pain relief.
Unfortunately, because arthritis is a progressive disease, sooner or later, one
may need to see a surgical option.
Hip resurfacing is another
alternative to hip replacement surgery. In this procedure, the implant is much
smaller and less bone is removed. It may be an option for younger people with
severe hip disease. Unlike the standard hip replacement surgery, the procedure
preserves more bone.
