Can amiodarone cause thyroid problems?

Amiodarone can cause either an overactive or underactive thyroid. In most studies, the over activity of the thyroid gland was not significant and most patients had no symptoms. The majority of patients do develop an underactive thyroid gland after 4-6 month of using amiodarone. Thus, if you are on amiodarone, you need to have your thyroid hormone studies done at least every 4-6 months. The good thing is that even though hypothyroidism occurs, only a few patients show clinical signs of the disorder. It does create a dilemma for the doctor because if the drug is working, then should one stop it or continue? You have to remember amiodarone is one of the best drug for arrhythmias and there is no other replacement drug which even comes a close second. Most doctors I presume would watch you and follow up closely to ensure that you do not develop severe symptoms of an underactive thyroid. The last thing the doctor wants to do is star you on thyroid hormone, which may or may not interfere with therapy.
