How to treat marijuana dependence

Is there any medication to treat dependence to marijuana?

Marijuana mania is on the rise in North America. This illicit drug is now being touted as the next penicillin. What the average consumer does not know is that the agent is addictive and causes physical and psychological dependence. Unlike other illicit drugs, the dependence cause by marijuana has not been well studied. As far as treatment of dependence to marijuana is concerned, many drugs have been tried but all have failed. Drugs like antidepressants, bupropion, SSRIs, gabapentin, and N acetyl cysteine have all been tried but none has shown to work. At the moment slow tapering of marijuana seems to be the best way to treat dependence. There is no magic bullet and if you stop the marijuana abruptly, you will develop withdrawal reactions. The intensity of the withdrawal reactions depend on how long you have been taking marijuana.
